what happens to a radioisotope when it undergoes nuclear decay

When a radioisotope undergo a nuclear decay, it changes to another atom entirely,  the new atom can  either two place below ( alpha decay) it  in the periodic table,  one place after( beta minus decay)  it or one position ( beta plus decay) before it in the periodic table of element.
