what is mass defect and why is it important

mass defects is the mass difference between the calculated mass and measured mass of a nucleus of an atom,
the mass defect can also be said as the total mass lost when an atom is created or destroyed,
mass defect is important because it determine the energy gain or lost in any nuclear process as given by einstein mass energy relation
E =MC2, where m is the mass defect.
