relation between refractive index and velocity of light

the relationship between the refractive index of light and it velocity is inversely proportional, when the as given by this formular
n= c/v
 as the velocity increases the refractive index decreases and viceversa, this is  why ligt medium have low refractive index while dense medium have large refractive index.
