what is happening within an atom that causes it to emit light in specific lines in a spectrum

Before an atom emit a light, it must absorb energy, it electron must be excited, the excited electron will jump from its ground state to a higher energy level only when the energy absorb is more than the energy of that state,
electron that jump to the higher energy level will return to the ground state after it has released the extra energy,
this is state in Bohr 2nd atomic postulate, “ atoms only emits energy when its electron jump back to its ground state.
