if a current carrying wire is in a magnetic field what direction is a force exerted on the wire,

the direction of force on a current carrying conductor is perpendicular ,  this is given by the right hand rule that Says,  it is used to show the direction of an induced current when a conductor move in a magnetic field, to filed the direction of force on the wire , use your right hand , using your thumb, point and middle finger, f the thumb is the direction of the motion f the conductor, the point finger should point to the direction of motion of the conductor,  the pint finger should point to the direction of the magnetic field and the middle finger is the direction of the force( electromotive force).
