use an analogy to define the term half life

let our atom sample  be a long horizontal wooden   pipe. if you are ask to cut the pipe in the middle after every 30 minutes. and throw it into fire.  the halflife is the time taken for the given length of the pipe available at a given instant to be reduced by half of its original length.
