how are energy and mass connected during the formation of an atom?

 The energy and mass are connected or related to each other during the formation of an atom as follows,

 the total number of protons and neutrons that come together to form the atom loss part of their mass (in the form of mass defect ) to form the binding energy of the atom. this can be well explained by the mass –energy relation.
