what is necessary to sustain a nuclear chain reaction

 to sustain a nuclear chain reaction, there must be a continuous supply of nuclear fuel to keep  the reaction going, if each nuclear fission result to subsequent reaction or in other word if one or more of the neutron released result to another fission  with uranium available.
